Event: Exhibition: Armenia: The Literary and Visual Tradition.
Venue: The Scotland-Russia Institute, 9 South College Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9AA.
Dates: Thursday 10 February – Saturday 26 March 2011.
Times: Open Tuesday-Friday, 11am-4pm, Saturday 1.30pm-4pm or by appointment outside those times.
Event Description: This exhibition shows Armenia both as an ancient civilisation and as it is today, with works by several Armenian photographers featuring the beauty and the life of the country.
Armenia is often referred to as a museum in the open air, with about 40,000 historical monuments. It was the first country to make Christianity its official religion (in 301 AD) and much of its cultural heritage is shaped by symbols and values associated with the Christian faith.
The Armenian language is an independent, one language subgroup within the Indo-European group. Its unique alphabet was created in 405AD and the exhibition will also feature copies of early manuscripts charting the history of the written language. The world-renowned expert in Armenian literature and culture is Dr Nersessian who has kindly provided some exhibits from his personal collection of books.
In the next two years there are two important Armenian anniversaries: in 2011 it will be 700 years since the translation of the Bible into Armenian and in 2012 it will be the 500th anniversary of the first printed Armenian book in Venice, 1512.
Exhibition curated by Vesna Petkovic, Pro Art and Co. Expert-Consultant: Dr Vrej Nersessian. Book collection from the private collection of Dr Vrej Nersessian.
Cost: Admission Free. Everyone Welcome.

Event: Artist Research at MESP 2011 by Déirdre Ní Mhathúna.
Taking recorded voice as her starting point, Déirdre creates installations that literally ‘give voice’ to the often unheard sounds and thoughts that make up our culturally diverse communities. During MESP 2011, Déirdre will be attending selected Festival events and inviting participants to contribute to her research for a future work. You may wish to record your opinions, say a poem or gift a small object to the developing work. You will have the opportunity to listen to and/or see how your recording or contribution will be used in the final work, which the artist hopes to exhibit during MESP 2012.
Déirdre Ní Mhathúna has contributed several times to MESP with a widely exhibited sound installation, ‘The Listening Seat.’ Its last showing was at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Sanctuary (MESP and early summer, 2010).
